She adjusts herself as the sun moves across the sky to absorb what warmth she can on this clear fall afternoon. Hopping out from behind a bright bush starting to shed for the winter, Judith attempts to catch Latasha of guard.

Judith : Ha, I gotcha.

Latasha (unfazed) : Judith, you’ve been there for some time. In this mild quite day its hard to not notice the rustling leaves when the wind is still.

Judith: Oh you. I’m starting to think you are just always looking for me.

Latasha : I’m never looking for anything, its more like waiting.

Judith: You were waiting for me?

Latasha : Do you misinterpret on purpose?

Judith takes a thermos out of the bush she had been hiding in. She unscrews the lid and takes a sip out of the receptacle.

Judith: I brought tea, its warm jasmine. That’s a kind you like. Have some.

Latasha: I’m starting to think that you are the one who is in fact waiting for me.

Judith: Ha, ya got me.

Judith pours some of the tea into the lid of the thermos. She sets it on the fountain next to Latasha. Judith then sits down on the other side of Latasha.

Latasha: I feel like you are trying to surround me, engulf me maybe.

Judith: Yep I’m just trying to catch you. Its my affection pincer move.

Latasha rolls her eyes and sighs. Judith inches close to Latasha until they are looking eye to eye. Judith has a big grin on her face and starts nodding her head.

Judith: Those eyes. They are so pretty I could stare at them all day. I just want to know what’s going on behind them.

Latasha breaks her gaze and stares at the tea on her opposite side.

Latasha: That intensity, it makes me uncomfortable.

Judith: I’m sorry, I just…well I just, well what do you think of me.

Latasha: Think of you?

Judith: Yes, I know, maybe it’s a bit much, but you just make me feel like I can express myself. I feel like the world is a play ground when I am around you.

Latasha: Well sometimes I waffle between you being intriguing or a foil, honestly. But even as much as I feel overwhelmed by your personality, it is also kind of relaxing.

Judith seems so happy she appears to be vibrating.

Judith : That makes me so happy. But I still feel like there is something you aren’t telling me. The closer I try to get to you, the more you inch away. I don’t want to make you uncomfortable. I just want you to feel as wonderful around me as I feel around you.

Latasha: I appreciate the sentiment, but you are wasting your time.

Judith: My time?

Latasha: Yes, I may have feelings for you. I’m not even sure to what depth, but they are pointless.

Judith: How can your feelings be pointless.

Latasha: You are a beaming personality, apt enough to do great things. I’m not the only one who views you as this empress among peasants. And I am but a plebeian. Unfit to even sit side by side like this, taking your kindness and tea.

Judith: That’s crazy, you are so smart, and funny in your own way.

Latasha: It’s more that, well I feel like you being with me, would be settling for someone who doesn’t match your status and potential. I’m just a broken thing. I’m like his empty well we are sitting on. Serving no purpose other than to be a place for people to rest until the move on.

Judith’s eyes begin to tear. She gets up and walks to the now cold cup of tea next to Latasha. She pours it out, and pours another fresh up from the thermos. She takes a sip of the tea.

Judith: It’s just the right temperature for me. Not to hot, not to cold. Maybe it’s not what other people expect but it’s perfect for me.

Judith sets her cup down and puts the thermos in Latasha’s hands. She sits down shoulder to shoulder with Latasha. She raises her cup and Latasha in reaction raises the thermos. They both take a drink.

Latasha: It’s good.

Judith: I’m glad.

Latasha is sitting on the edge of a large stone fountain that seems to have dried up years ago.
